Welcome to Take Back the tech UK - where resistance is IT.
Are you ready to take action? Today is Day 15 of the 16 days of activism to end violence against women, and is part of this year's Take Back The Tech!
In 2007, Take Back the Tech UK worked with 13 UK based organisations working to end Violence Against Women (VAW) during the 16 days of activism to end VAW from November 25th to Dec 10th.
All of these organisations used ICTs - Information and Communication technologies - such as websites, blogs, videos, digital stories and images, e-zines, e-bulletins, virtual worlds (second life) and so on, in their work to stop violence against women.
In 2008, TBTT UK continues to work with these organisations, and other organisations who are joining the campaign this year. Each day, we'll highlight a women's organisation working to end VAW and a
daily action from our global sister network.
You can read more about the organisations we've featured so far in this year's campaign here.
Today's organisation is The Stella Project, a partnership between the Greater London Domestic Violence Project (GLDVP) and the Greater London Alcohol and Drug Alliance (GLADA), which was set up in 2002 to address gaps in the current service provision for both survivors and perpetrators of domestic violence who are problematic substance users.
Day fifteen's global action is Map it | Safe places online.
Being safe may seem like a luxury, but it is not – it's our right. Different women may define feeling safe in many different ways – walking down well-lit streets, knowing your home will not be subjected to armed attack, not having to worry if your partner is having a "bad" day. If you use computers or the internet, you may know that online safety is also vital. Given the increasing sophistication and ability to interconnect data on the internet, an online presence may be linked to specific physical whereabouts, putting women at risk. We can all play a role in increasing online safety. Being smart about the risks ourselves is one way. Spaces that establish clear guidelines for community participation or informing about online safety are other examples.
Watch for updates each day - and work with us to end violence against women.
