Greater London Domestic Violence Project (GLDVP)

Organisation Information:

GLDVP

Who is GLDVP?

This year GLDVP celebrated 10 years of working to reduce and prevent domestic violence. GLDVP provides support to frontline services and, in partnership with statutory and voluntary organisations, delivers the Mayor’s London Domestic Violence Strategy. This work has enabled the development of innovative projects addressing specific areas with intersections to domestic violence, including mental health, faith communities, drugs and alcohol, children and young people and women and the criminal justice system.

Organisation's Story of Resistance:

Website

Information is knowledge and knowledge is power so all those working to end domestic violence are empowered with better access to information and information networks. GLDVP built a simple but versatile website that could cope with the growing demand for information and knowledge requested by services and individuals, not just in London but internationally.

e-updates (website updates)

As part of its everyday work, GLDVP is in constant dialogue with key statutory and voluntary sector services putting them at the forefront of gathering, learning and receiving new information. In order to benefit everyone wanting to end domestic violence, GLDVP makes new information as widely available as soon as possible.

Although GLDVP’s e-newsletter is sent out every month, GLDVP wanted to come up with a way to keep people informed of up-to-the-moment developments within the domestic violence sector. As their website is continuously updated, GLDVP created an e-update service called GLDVP Website Updates to let people know when new pieces of information, policy updates and resources are put online. Each time subscribers are e-mailed a GLDVP Website Update they are directed to a section of the GLDVP website where they can view the information update as well as a number of related links to other information resources.

Organisation ICT tools information:

Website

Launched in 2006, GLDVP’s website has a wealth of free tools and resources to help service providers, policy makers, local government officials, MPs and educators keep up to date with all the latest developments in the sector. For example, there are information resources, briefings from specific project areas, consultation responses, contact details of organisations, papers and resources from past events and conferences (including the London Domestic Violence Forum), as well as listings for jobs, future events and training.

Rochelle Dancel, GLDVP’s Administrative & Information Co-ordinator, is clear about the organisational and personal benefits of a good website,

“Having a website has made it much easier to get information to organisations and service providers. We’re usually the first port of call if someone is looking for information on domestic violence. Rather than e-mailing it out several times – which is what we used to do – we can just direct people to our website. Now people know to look on our website first before contacting us which has saved us a lot of time. We are also taking advantage of newer ICTs to make more resources available. For example, at the last London Domestic Violence Forum we played some video clips at the event; they are now on our site thanks to youtube.”

GLDVP’s website averages approximately 55,000 hits every month and has become one of the most effective ways of communicating with anyone out there! Visit the website at www.gldvp.org.uk

e-updates (website updates)

Rochelle Dancel, GLDVP’s Administrative & Information Co-ordinator, says, “Although we have a monthly e-newsletter, we created GLDVP Website Updates because developments in the sector can happen quite quickly so information can be dated if we wait until next month’s e-newsletter to put it out there. It also means that we can direct people to trusted sources of further information or related links. Although we put all of our information online as soon as we get it, people don’t know that our website has been updated unless we tell them. Having access to the latest information is very important, especially when services are filling out funding applications or looking to build campaigns. Does providing information updates contribute to ending domestic violence? A sector that is as informed as possible can make the best decisions to increase the safety of victims and their children, hold perpetrators accountable, reduce social tolerance and educate children and young people in order to end domestic violence.”
